Shari Low talks about the choices we make in life and what would have happened if we had chosen differently.
Do you ever look back in life and wonder what would have happened if you changed just one decision?
Perhaps you could have walked away, but instead you stayed. Or you stuck it out, when you should have left. Or maybe you chose a path to a dead end, when there was another route that might have taken you to a happier place? Did you choose one person over another? And what would have happened if you’d gone for another option?
In my life there have been many times when I rolled the dice. There were serious relationships that I ended because… actually sometimes I couldn’t even put my finger on why. Just that deep feeling that I wasn’t where I was meant to be. And then – to the shock of my friends and the horror of my granny – I got engaged to a guy I’d known for a week, married him, and thankfully twenty five years later we’ve survived ups, downs, and more dramas and disasters than I could ever have imagined. Yet I’d make the same choice again in any lifetime because he’s my person, my happy ever after.
But what if I’d done something differently? If I hadn’t met him that night? If I’d tripped over my bootcut jeans (please don’t judge me – it was the nineties), ended up in A&E and our paths hadn’t crossed? Or if we’d thrown in the towel somewhere along the way? Or perhaps no matter what decisions I made, our life together would have happened anyway, because the fates would have found another way for us to meet.
These were the thoughts that were the starting point for With Or Without You. It’s the tale of Liv and Nate, who have been married for a few contented but unexciting years, and who already feel they’ve slipped into being not much more than great friends. The agree that they will go their separate ways on the last day of 1999, but as the clock ticks down, Nate changes his mind. The book then splits into two narratives, one following their lives over the next eighteen years if they stay together, the other charting their futures apart.
When the last page is turned, we see both outcomes and we can decide whether they should have tried again or not…
And whether, for Liv and Nate, the chance of happy ever after – whether together or apart – came down to their choices or destiny.

Have you ever made a life-changing decision and then wondered if you made the right one…?
When Liv and Nate walked up the aisle, Liv knew she was marrying the one, her soul mate and her best friend.
Six years later, it feels like routine and friendship is all they have left in common. What happened to the fun, the excitement, the lust, the love?
In the closing moments of 1999, Liv and Nate decide to go their separate ways, but at the last minute, Liv wavers. Should she stay or should she go?
Over the next twenty years we follow the parallel stories to discover if Liv’s life, heart and future have been better with Nate… Or without him?
Shari Low is the No1 best-selling author of over 20 novels, including With Or Without You, Another Day In Winter, One Day In December, A Life Without You and The Story Of Our Life. And because she likes to over-share toe-curling moments and hapless disasters, she is also the shameless mother behind a collection of parenthood memories called Because Mummy Said So. Once upon a time she met a guy, got engaged after a week, and twenty-something years later she lives near Glasgow with her husband, a labradoodle, and two teenagers who think she’s fairly embarrassing except when they need a lift.
