Shari Low talks about Christmas and her Winter Day trilogy.
You see, my name is Shari Low and I’m addicted to all things crimbo. I love the trees. The songs. The decorations. The wrapping of pressies. The planning of lunch for 14 relatives. True, I don’t so much love the bit where I invariably wreck the Christmas lunch because I am to cooking what penguins are to a sunlounger in Benidorm, but a few yuletide cocktails and the fact that my Brussels Sprouts could be used as bullets is long forgotten.
But my other favourite festive thing? Curling up with a Christmas novel.
Last year, my first Christmas novel One Day In December was published by Aria. It told the story of four very different characters over the course of a 24 hour period a few days before Christmas. Caro sets off on a quest to find out if her relationship with her father has been based on a lifetime of lies. Lila decides to tell her lover’s wife of their secret affair. Cammy is on the way to pick up the ring for the surprise proposal to the woman he loves. And Bernadette vows to walk away from her controlling husband of 30 years. As the hours pass, their lives intertwine and connections are revealed, with lots of surprises, twists and dramas along the way.
Thankfully, the response to the novel from readers was fantastic and that inspired me to extend the concept to a three book series. The second instalment, Another Day In Winter, hits the e-shelves on October 2nd. The theme is the same, but the characters are different – although a few familiar faces from previous novels do pop in and out. This time around, we share the lives of George, Chrissie, Shauna and Tom on a chilly day in December. Shauna (from my first Aria novel The Story Of Our Life) touches down at Glasgow Airport on a quest to find answers from the past. Meanwhile, across town, elderly patient George knows his time is nearing the end, but is it too late to come to terms with his two greatest regrets? Marketing guru Tom uncovers a betrayal that rocks his world as he finally tracks down the one that got away. And single mum Chrissie is ready to force her love-life out of hibernation, but can anyone compare to the man who broke her heart?
I loved every moment of writing Another Day In Winter – the laughs, the love stories, and even the bits that made me cry into my extra large tub of Quality Street.
I hope readers will feel the same and it’ll be their top choice to curl up with this Christmas.
And my top choice? I’m on the hunt for a cookbook that teaches me to cook Brussels sprouts that don’t turn out like bullets.
