Lori Foster talks about her new novel, the authors who inspire her, and her projects for the future.

1. Tell us more about your latest book, Cooper’s Charm.

Cooper’s Charm is named for the resort where the main characters meet and, eventually, fall in love. Cooper Cochran purchased the resort after a very difficult time in his life. He needed a fresh start, a way to move forward, and the laidback atmosphere of the resort seemed like the perfect place to regain some inner peace. Falling in love was never in his plan, not after everything he’d lost.

After her own, very personal issues, Phoenix gave up her landscaping business and sought a job as groundskeeper at the resort. She’s looking for perspective on her life, hopeful of stepping away from her residual fears.

In a way, they’re both “hiding” in plain sight, surrounded by people but staying alone. Then fate brings them closer and closer together until they find a united cause – along with intimacy, and then love.

2. Where did you get the inspiration for the novel?

Before I bought my lake house, my husband and I used to take the RV to a local resort. I wrote many books by a creek in the more remote area of the park. Many of the things I describe in the book are based off that resort. I still love it there, but don’t visit very often any more.

3. What comes to you first – the setting, the characters or some aspect of the story?

The hero came to me. Heroes always come to me first. Once they’re in my head, they tell me who the heroine should be, the setting, plot – pretty much everything. I just listen, sometimes take notes, and write the scenes the way they dictate. I’m a seat-of-my-pants writer, meaning I don’t really know what’s going to happen until it happens, and it’s almost always the hero cluing me in. 😉

4. Has any other writer in particular influenced the way you write?

Sooo many writers have influenced me, in so many different ways. Early on, when I first “discovered” the amazing world of romance novels, I glommed everything I could find from Julie Garwood, Amanda Quick & Jayne Ann Krentz, Catherine Coulter and Linda Howard – and so many more. Those books remain on my “keeper shelves” and just as I visit friends and family, I visit those early books.

While I love each author’s talent on the whole, there are specific aspects from each that really impacted me. Coulter’s quirky banter, Garwood’s emotion (and ultra-Alpha guys), JAK’s perfect execution, Linda Howard’s steamy sensuality. I find individual “styles” that I want to see in my own work. I’m NOT saying I succeed – they’re all such amazingly talented examples of what books should be, but my muse is definitely influenced.

5. What’s next for you?

Two new series! July 31st, Cooper’s Charm, the 1st in my resort series is released, but there will be at least one more book in that setting. Then November 20th, the 1st book in my Road to Love series, Driven to Distraction, will hit shelves. I know there will be at least 3 books in that series. The Road to Love series focuses on brothers who work as couriers, along the lines of the movie series The Transporter with Jason Statham – but without Statham’s lack of scruples. 😉

Also, for any readers who are following the Buckhorn Brothers, each year I add a new novella that I call “benefit books,” meaning all advance & all royalties for the life of the book go to a local no-kill animal shelter, The Animal Adoption Foundation. The newest novella is Tucker.

Thank you so much for the Q&A! If readers have any other questions, they could check my website or follow me on Facebook or use the contact link via my website to send me an email.

One summer, two sisters and a chance to start over…

Before the burglary that shattered her confidence, Phoenix Rose had a fiancé, a successful store and a busy, happy existence. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, friendly colleagues and a charismatic, widowed boss, Phoenix is slowly inching her way back into the world.

Visiting Cooper’s Charm to check up on her little sister, Ridley Rose impulsively agrees to fill in as housekeeper. Still reeling from an ego-bruising divorce, she finds satisfaction in a job well done — and in the attention of the resort’s handsome scuba instructor.

For Phoenix and Ridley, Cooper’s Charm is supposed to be merely temporary. But this detour may lead to the place they most need to be, where the future is as satisfying as it is surprising…
