Lucie Wheeler says the highs of being a writer outweighs the lows bigtime.
Just a small round of some of my highs and lows of being a writer. You’ll notice that the lows aren’t really that bad, and the highs outweigh them – what can I say, being an author is AWESOME!
My writing career really started to take form when, back in 2013, I was shortlisted for the New Talent Award – and I won!
But due to work / life commitments, things were quiet and very slow, until last year… when I signed a two-book deal with Harper Impulse! This picture was a few days after when hubby and I went out to celebrate.
And I was honoured to be invited to HarperCollins HQ to attend their Christmas party for their authors. It was surreal to be there with a name badge that said ‘Author’!
However, work and life was still crazy and I was now at university too, so things became hectic and I had to resort to VERY early mornings and writing ANYWHERE I could.
And finally, after 4 months of juggling – the first draft was done. And I was exhausted,
It was now that I decided to go on a little writing retreat with my Romaniac buddies Sue, Laura and Catherine. I used this time to plan out book 2 – because I had to remember that this contract was for two books! So I needed to get cracking on planning the next one so that when it was time to write it, I could do so quicker.
But there wasn’t much time to relax because shortly after I returned, in came the edits for Book 1! I eventually went through two rounds of structural edits and a proofread – all whilst completing coursework for my degree. Cue more sleepless nights and early morning wake-up calls.
But everything was totally worth it and I cannot describe the feeling when I first saw my book go live on Amazon! And with such a beautiful front cover too!
And then, when the book went out for early reviews, I felt sick! But I didn’t need to worry, because the 5* reviews came flying in. I’ll admit, there have been tears.
Seeing my face in the local newspaper was just as surreal as seeing my name on Amazon! And what made this special was that this article was submitted to the paper by the press office at Anglia Ruskin University where I study – they have been incredibly supportive of my writing achievement.
So I took the plunge, with all the amazing support around me and launched my very own channel on YouTube!
And here I am. What a whirlwind the last year has been. But I hope it is the start of many more like this…
Meet Pippa… After years of trying and a failed IVF attempt, Pippa is thrilled to see two little lines appear on a pregnancy test. Finally a precious baby to call her own. This is all Pippa has ever wanted…if only husband Jason could show just a little excitement.
Imogen… A baby is the icing on the cake for Imogen and Alice – proof that their love for each other can overcome any obstacle. But when Imogen starts receiving malicious texts, it’s clear that not everyone is thrilled about the girls’ good news.
And Ellie… A drunken one-night stand and Ellie’s life is ruined! Pregnant, jobless and the relationship with her best friend, Chris, over- forever. Because Chris just happens to be the father of Ellie’s baby…and potentially the love of her life!
For these first time mums the road to motherhood is bumpier than most!
