Suzy K Quinn talks about the choices we make as women.
1. Can you tell us a bit more about your novel The Bad Mother’s Diary?
Sure! I love talking about my books. I like talking about myself too. Basically I’m a bad dinner party guest.
The Bad Mother’s Diary is about a girl who has a baby with a crap boyfriend. I mean, he’s REALLY bad. I don’t want to spoil it, but you’ll see how bad he is about half way through the book … Juliette goes through a lot in this book, but ultimately the ending will make you feel amazing and uplifted. I’m still pinching myself about all the good reviews.
2. Who is your favourite character in the novel and why?
I like Juliette’s mum, Sheila. She’s a larger-than-life, foul-mouthed landlady who says exactly what she thinks, and you love her for it.
3. Did you base anything in the novel on your own real-life experiences?
Oh yes! All the characters are real people, and LOADS of the baby stuff happened to me. Apologies if you don’t have kids, because some stuff might not resonate, but if you’ve had a baby, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about!
4. What are you most proud of about the book?
The reviews. And all the feedback I’m getting from readers saying the book has made them cry with laughter and lifted their day.
5. Where is your favourite place to write?
At home, with the kids running around. I have a nice view of our garden, and sometimes I get to see pigeons have sex on our shed. Or they could be fighting … I’m not sure.
6. What have you learnt about yourself since becoming an author?
I’ve learned never to have chocolate in the house when working at home. Because I eat it all …
7. What type of books do you like to read and who are your favourite authors?
I love romance and chick lit – Barbara Cartland is GREAT!
8. Which was the last book that made you laugh out loud?
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, but that’s cheating really, because I re-read it all the time. It’s in our bathroom by the toilet – which is the greatest compliment a book can get.
9. What’s next for you as an author?
I honestly didn’t expect so many people to love Bad Mother’s Diary – I thought it would be a real niche book for new mums. But since people keep asking me, I’m going to write the Bad Mother’s Christmas – out this November.
Juliette Duffy has had a baby. But motherhood isn’t quite how she imagined it.
She doesn’t live in a cottage with roses around the door.
She doesn’t know how to get Daisy to sleep. She doesn’t own a rolling pin.
And then there’s Daisy’s sh*tbag of a father …
