Nicky Wells shares her confessions of an eternal rock chick…

3VIPSo I write Romance That Rocks Your World. I write about rock stars and the girl next door, I write about glamour and glitz, romance and intrigue, and excitement. You probably know that by now. I’ve become used to advertising my brand, to speaking about my love for rock and that undying attraction to rock musicians.

But every now and then, it’s useful to get a reminder what that’s really all about — and I granted myself that reminder a few weeks back when I attended a rock gig by a band I’ve known and loved pretty much all my adult life. (That would be UK rockers, FM, just in case you’re wondering). I didn’t just buy tickets, oh no! This time round, I splurged on the VIP package, which meant I got to see the sound check, meet the band and hang around for the after-show event and chats.

Now, just a little like my leading lady, Sophie Penhalligan, at the beginning of Sophie’s Turn (book 1), I kind of thought I’d grown out of this strange star-struckness of old. And just like Sophie, I discovered that I hadn’t, not quite. Appearing at that concert venue positively gave me butterflies, and knowing that I would be part of a select few to view the sound check and meet the band had me alternately hot and cold with anticipation.

I should hasten to add that my loving and very lovely husband came with me to this gig and indulgently took photos of me and the musicians, happily joining in with the chat. I didn’t go completely overboard or forget myself, of course I didn’t. But I got an enormous, huge kick out of the event. I could imagine what it would be like to be Sophie, to be this close to a band, to be part of the action, and to get drawn into the scene. To be tempted.

I remembered, then, in every last detail why I write the books I write: to live the buzz, the excitement, the glamour, if only by proxy. To rave about music and talent and to indulge my own love of rock music. To shed a little bit of light into the behind-the-scenes mechanics of what it’s really like to be a band on tour. And last but not least, to bring my readers into this world and have them share in the fun.

What can I say but… rock on?
