Camilla Isley discusses her new love.

I hate the way you look at me,
when I don’t know what to say to you.
I hate it when you keep your distance,
and when we fight.
I hate it when you’re wrong,
even more when you’re right.
I hate that you know me so well.
I hate that you’re so strong,
and that with you I have no shell.
I hate the way you boss me around.
I hate it when you wake me up early,
and when I can’t sleep at night.
I hate it when you let me down.
I hate that with you it feels like a free fall.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you,
not even close…
not even a little bit…
not even at all.

This poem is dedicated to the newest love in my life. I’m not talking about my husband, sorry  babe, I’m talking about a different kind of love, the love that I’ve discovered for Writing.

Becoming a writer brought as much disruption in my life as entering in a new passionate relationship. It came unexpectedly out of nowhere — or from within me, I’m not sure — and changed me and my way of looking at things irreversibly. Like in every intense love story it made me reach the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. It made me feel sheer love at times and blinded me with cold fury at others.

If you ever decide to enter in a relationship with Writing as I did, beware … as it will be the best and worst thing that has ever happened to you. Why? Because Writing is bossy, it demands all your time, it never lets you sleep, it always stays at the back of your mind constantly nagging your brain about this or that storyline.

Writing is needy, you have to take care of it or it won’t leave you alone.

Writing is independent and strong headed, it has a mind of his own; it doesn’t accept to be closed in a box or to be labelled. Writing is maddening, it knows all your buttons and it will push them whenever it pleases.

Writing will absorb you completely; your friends and family will give you grief because you spend all your time with it and you don’t hang out with them anymore. It will make your partner jealous and will have your cat declare war to your laptop. Writing will make you laugh, cry, scream in frustration, and hug yourself in contentment. It will make you feel whole after a good paragraph and hollow before a blank page.

Writing will make you feel as if there weren’t enough hours in the day, and it will make a minute drag forever while you stare at that flashing cursor searching for an inspiration that isn’t coming. Writing is such a nuisance that you’ll be tempted to give it up many times, but you never will. Because nothing will ever make you feel as Writing does.

You may have recognized the end of the poem as a quote from the movie “10 Things I Hate About You”. Growing up it was one of my favorite chick flicks, check it out if you haven’t watched it, and today for this guest post I’ve decided to pay tribute to it by composing my very own poem dedicated to Writing and to talk about how becoming a writer has messed with my life from a unique prospective. I hope you enjoyed it, and I would love to read your poems dedicated to whomever/whatever you “hate”.
