Faerl Marie says music helps her get inside the minds and hearts of her characters.

Music is a big part of my writing process, it helps me to really get inside the minds and hearts of my characters. Music evokes very strong images for me and I’m often caught somewhere listening to a song on the radio and plunged into a completely new scene or one that I’ve been working on and it flows so readily.

Occasionally, I’ll listen to one song over and over for as long as it takes to finish the scene (it drives my husband nuts!) because it so strongly associates with the feeling and aesthetic of that moment for the characters.

The beginning of The Golden Apple is somber. Poppy is still grieving her husband’s death and the life that she’s moving away from. Perth is a song that makes me feel immediately somber, reflective and nostalgic. The next few songs reflect Poppy’s growing hope for the future. She is still grieving all of the loss of her former life but she is trying to move past it. She is constantly reminded of Josh and his absence, even when she feels hopeful about her future in New York.

  • Perth by Bon Iver
  • If I Die Young by The Band Perry
  • I’ll Be by Edwin McCain
  • Out of the Woods by Nickel Creek

The heart of the novel is really about Austin’s love for Poppy and his pursuit of her in the face of her grief. He is trying to be sensitive to her feelings and sadness but also be the catalyst she needs to get ahead of them.

  • Free Fallin’ by John Mayer
  • Yellow by Coldplay
  • Feels Like Home by Chantal Kreviazuk
  • Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth

Once Poppy realises her feelings for Austin and comes to terms with letting go of her past life and love the novel takes on a brighter tone. Austin and Poppy can finally pursue their relationship!

  • Wanted by Hunter Hayes
  • Thank You by Alanis Morissette
  • Begin Again by Taylor Swift
  • I Never Told You by Colbie Caillat
  • She is Love by Parachute
  • Hallelujah, I Love Her So by Ray Charles

The Golden Apple ends with Poppy and Austin happy and excited for their future and family. They are blissful in their love and feeling very Lucky!

Meet Poppy Parker, a recent widow who knows she must move forward but has no idea which direction to take. To start fresh, Poppy moves from her idyllic home in Georgia to the grimy glamour of New York City to open up her own boutique and find a way to live and love without her husband.

Austin Bandy has been in love with Poppy since the moment he laid eyes on her years ago, right before her wedding. Now she is back, grieving and broken hearted by her nearly-perfect husband’s death – not Austin’s ideal romantic situation. He needs to wait for her to recover but not so long that someone else has the chance to move in and sweep his dream girl off her feet and keep him as a “good friend” forever.
