Michele Gorman is working on the sequel to Single and the City. Hannah’s off to Hong Kong and Michele wants readers to help create the story. Find out how you can get involved…
We women are sharers, aren’t we? It’s been proven by research but we see and experience it every day in our lives. In work we collaborate, with friends we talk and talk and talk about our lives and the decisions we’re making in them. And yet for the past 10 years, when I’ve written, I’ve done it alone.
Then a few months ago an idea popped into my head. I was having lunch with my agent, who’d just read my new manuscript, and we thrashed out ideas for its revision. I l-o-v-e-d that process, the thrill of solving problems together, and the security of knowing that two heads are definitely better than one.
And I thought, why did I wait until the manuscript was finished to do this?
On a northbound Tube train, the idea to write my next book collaboratively was born. I could have joined a writing group, bringing chapters to discuss. I could have asked my lovely agent to let me put her on speed-dial for daily brainstorms. But I don’t want to collaborate with other experts. After all, I am a writer, so I’ve already got that perspective.
I’m writing for chick lit fans. I want to collaborate with women as readers. How often have you read a book and thought ‘That character should have done so-and-so instead.’ I know I do, often! When we read a book we know what we like about it and what we don’t, what works and what doesn’t. Our perspective as readers is as important as my perspective as a writer. It’s you, the reader, who I want to work with to write Single in the City’s follow-up.
So I hope hundreds, thousands, of women will join me in this super-exciting process. It’s pretty simple really, thanks to social media and lovely bloggers like Steph at Chicklit Club. Over on my blog I’ll ask for your opinions about the story, plotlines and characters, and these will feed into the story. In a way, you will guide Hannah’s next adventure.
Is it a deal?
I’ve just started posting questions (the first scene is on the blog if you’d like to have a sneak preview of the book months before its publication!). You can join in any time and I expect that I’ll be posting something new almost every day.
Please sign up by email (on the left hand side of the blog’s homepage) to get notices when I post a new entry, or check Facebook or Twitter, where I’ll also post a notice to each new blog entry/question for you. If we’re not already connected on Facebook, please do send me a friend request on my page and if we’re not tweetfriends, I’d love for us to follow each other (@expatdiaries).
Thank you so much for helping to write the next book!
